The club depends on voluntary drivers to allow training weekends and day trips to take place. The club needs a everyone who is eligible to drive to register with the Students Union. Registering with the students union ensures that you are covered to drive the vehicle through the Union’s insurance policy. There is a £10 charge however this paid for by the club so as a club member you have nothing to pay.

Please note – that you can only register to drive a van / minibus in the first semester.

Step 1 – Am I Eligible

You must fill the following criteria to be able to register:-

• You must be over 21 years old and have held a full UK driving licence for two years
• Not had an accident within the last five years
• The driver must have no more than one accident or one conviction

Step 2 – Assesment Procedure

The  Students Union require that a two stage assesment procedure is carried out before you can drive the Unions vehicles. The assesment procedure is very simple, and is mainly common sense however it ensure that you are confident before you drive a minibus / van on your own.

1. Class Room Session

During the classroom session you will watch a safety video on how to drive a minibus safely, loading and unloading a roof rack. The driver will also be shown how to undertake a static familiarisation of the vehicle, i.e. oil, water, seat and wiou window adjustment, etc.  In addition there will be a written questionnaire of which 6 out 9 questions must be correct.

2.  Assesment Drive

The assessment drive will follow during which time the driver will be asked to demonstrate competence of several maneuvers, namely; reversing, box junctions, overtaking, bay parking, parallel parking and verbal commentary whilst driving.  They will also be asked questions from the Highway Code and questions to do with the static examination.

What Happens if I fail one of more of the Assement Steps?

There is no problem – you can re-take any assesment steps again and you will be given specific training on the points which you failed on previously.

Step 3 – How do I Register

Fill out the following form and attach a passport photograph, and your paper and card driving licence. Please take this to the union’s reception where they will photocopy your driving licence and arrange a date and time when you can carry out the assesment procedure.
