Hi everyone!

If you’re reading this then theres a good chance that you’re a girl trying to talk yourself in, or maybe out, of joining Loughborough’s fabulous cycling club. I was doing exactly the same thing last year, so here are some very valid reasons why you should join!….

1) Granted, we are fairly outnumbered by the opposite gender, which may seem slightly intimidating at first. But be assured, everybody is very friendly and welcoming, so you won’t feel out of place!

2) You might be an elite cyclist competing in national/international races, like our previous women’s captain (I’ve got a lot to live up to!), or you might ride for fun and have given a few races a go (like me) or think you might try, or you could be a purely recreational rider who just wants to ride with likeminded people for enjoyment or training, and have no interest in competing. Whichever kind of cyclist you are, then you’ll fit in just fine. Theres a wide range of abilities and interests here.

3) There are already female riders in the various disciplines of the club. I’m on a lot of the XC rides (although it would be great to get a few more female MTB riders) and theres plenty of ‘girl road riders’. Theres also women in the club who ride on the track, so you won’t be alone, whatever your thing! I’ve recently been doing some road riding, and I’m liking it lots, so will definitely be pushing for some girl specific road and MTB rides this year. So don’t be put off by the thought of being the only girl on a ride.

4) The socials and trips are a lot of fun. Okay, I admit I was fairly mortified at being the only girl at the christmas army social last year, but trust me, it was a great night, so definitely don’t be put off. On the trips side of things, the more girls we can get to join, the more inclined we will all be to attend the trips, whether its a trip in the evening to the velodrome, or a weekend away in Wales. They’re all great fun!

So now you’ve got absolutely no excuse not to come along to our stall at the AU bazaar and sign up. You certainly won’t be the only girl. At least come along for the meeting and freshers ride, and see what you think. You won’t be disappointed.

Hopefully I’ll see you all soon-if you want to ask anything at all, then drop me an email, or feel free to give me an add on facebook and make yourself known.

Christina Wiejak (LSCC women’s captain) :)
